Frequently Asked Questions

Here are our answers to the questions that we are asked most frequently. If you have a question that does note feature here, please send it to us and we will answer it as quickly as possible.

1. I am Anaemic, can I drink Nurishment?

Nurishment can be consumed by people with Anaemia. Nurishment is blended with a selection of vitamins and minerals (A, B1, B2, B6, Niacin, B12, C and folacin) as well as rich in Calcium and Iron. One bottle of Nurishment Extra (plastic bottle) contains 50% RDA of iron.

2. Can I drink more than one can of Nurishment in one day?

The key issue is one of general diet and portion control and as such we recommend that you drink 1 pack of Nurishment per day, whether it is Nurishment Extra or Nurishment Original. Nurishment is usually drunk as a 'gap filler' - if you have missed a meal or simply don't have time to eat.

3. Can I consume too much vitamins and minerals?

The key issue is one of general diet and portion control. Nurishment is often consumed as an alternative to a meal because of its filling nature. It will be difficult to consume too many vitamins and minerals by drinking Nurishment or for it to have any seriously negative effects on the body. You would have to consume in excess of 10 cans per day for some vitamins or over 50 cans for others, depending on the RDA of the vitamin or mineral.

It is also good to know that our body helps to regulate or get rid of some vitamins that we do not use. We cannot store water-soluble vitamins such as the B group vitamins and vitamin C, and so if we consume more than we need, they are simply excreted.

Our advice is to consume 1 pack of Nurishment per day, whether it is Nurishment Extra or Nurishment Original. Nurishment is usually consumed as 'gap filler', if you have missed a meal or simply don't have time to eat, helping to replace some of the vitamins and/or minerals that you may have missed.

4. Can I Weight Gain or Build Muscles with Nurishment?

Yes, you can drink Nurishment as part of a weight gain programme or a body building routine. It has high protein levels, as much as 21gms per can, other essential vitamins and minerals and will be perfectly fine to consume along with other foods as part of a balanced diet. Remember the key issue is one of general diet and portion control.

5. Nurishment had a lot more flavours in the range that I also liked, what has happened to them?

Yes, Nurishment had a lot more flavours in the range, flavours such as Coconut, Blackcurrant, Eggnog, Pineapple and Mango. We are constantly looking for new flavours and are guided by what you as our consumers tell us you would like to try. These may include new flavours or flavours that were sold in the range previously. Mango is one such flavour which we have reintroduced due to public demand. The feedback has been fantastic. Please continue to look out for our new flavours and we welcome your thoughts on them.

6. Where can I buy Nurishment from?

Nurishment Original is widely available and can be bought from most major supermarkets, forecourts and throughout the convenience and independent retail trade. Recently-launched Nurishment Extra is not as widely available, but can be found in selected Tesco and Asda stores and in a growing number of convenience stores. If your local supermarket or convenience store doesn't stock Nurishment, ask them why?!

You can also buy Nurishment from www.caribbeanfoodcentre.com and have it delivered direct to your door.

7. Is Nurishment suitable for Young Children and Pregnant Women? Why does the Nurishment Original pack have a warning statement that refers to it being unsuitable for both children under 3 as well as pregnant and nursing mothers?

Nurishment is not specially formulated to be an infant food. This claim has been inserted due to the presence of added vitamin A and Vitamin D. Existing recommendations by the Food Standards Agency and COMA recommends control of these Vitamins in certain sectors of the population.

We do not recommend that Nurishment Original is given to children under the age of three and we also advise that it is unsuitable for women during pregnancy and nursing mothers.

Most doctors would advise that pregnant women and very young children should monitor their intake of Vitamin A and avoid having large amounts. The vitamin A in Nurishment Original (can) is very high and you will get Vitamin A in other things you eat on a daily basis so that is why the can carries the warning.

However Nurishment Extra (plastic bottle) has been reformulated for this very reason and we have removed the Vitamin A &D from the formulation so that you can continue to enjoy Nurishment.

8. Why does Nurishment have such a long shelf life?

Typically, ready to drink (RTD) milk drinks are made using one of two processing methods retort processing or aseptic processing. Nurishment uses a retort processing method, whereby the cans are sterilized by superheating them for a long period at high temperatures. This kills any bacteria naturally found in milk and effectively sterilizes both the can and the liquid inside. The retort process allows for the long shelf life on the product; unlike fresh milk which is pasteurised at lower temperatures which gives it a shorter shelf life.

This process also helps to give Nurishment that distinct taste that all our consumers have come to love over the years.

9. Is Nurishment suitable for vegetarians?

There are three varieties of Nurishment Original (cans) and Nurishment Extra (plastic bottles) that are suitable for vegetarians. They are the Chocolate, Banana and Vanilla flavours.

However, Nurishment Strawberry, Raspberry & Cherry are unsuitable due to the red colour E120 - Cochineal. Cochineal is widely used in other milk drinks, yogurt, sweets, toppings, biscuits, desserts and other foods in the UK and around the world. We use it as the colour does not change when the product is sterilized at high temperatures. The Emulsifier, E471- Mono- and diglycerides is derived from vegetable fat.

10. Do you recommend Nurishment for older people?

Yes, Nurishment is enjoyed by adults of all ages, for many different reasons. We know that Nurishment is drunk by older members of the community, some of whom tell us that they eat less than they used to and are looking for a nutritious meal supplement, or occasionally a meal replacement.

11. What is the difference between Nurishment Original and Nurishment Extra?

Both types of Nurishment are a rich source of vitamins and minerals, but the content does differ slightly.

Nurishment Original provides balanced levels of essential vitamins (A, B1, B2, B6, Niacin, B12, C and folacin) as well as being rich in Calcium and Iron. Each can of Nurishment provides at least 84% of the RDA for these vitamins listed.

The role of some key vitamins and minerals has been reviewed in Nurishment Extra. In particular components such as Iron identified by the Dept of Health National Diet and Nutrition Survey (2002) shows women's intake of iron is lower than it should be. Vitamins such as Vitamin C help people to absorb iron more easily and Nurishment contains up to 100% of people's RDA of Vitamin C.

We also removed Vitamin A and D from the Nurishment Extra ingredient which now means that young children and pregnant women can enjoy it.

Calcium presence is an inherent feature of a milk drink and the National Diet Survey shows that its consumption should be encouraged.

So Extra's list of 'goodies' includes calcium, iron and zinc. Its also rich in Vitamin C, Thiamin (B1) and Riboflavin (B2).

12. Does Nurishment taste better serve chilled?

This is a matter of personal taste. Nurishment Original is sold on both the ambient shelf and in the chiller cabinet. Once opened, we recommend that if you want to save some for later, you place the can in fridge and finish it within 24 hours of opening.

We recommend to retailers that they place Nurishment Extra in the chiller cabinet as most people, but not all, prefer it chilled.

13. What differentiates Nurishment from the many flavoured milks that are available?

Nurishment is much more than a flavoured milk or a milk shake, primarily because of its fortifying, nutritious nature and the inclusion of the vitamins and minerals which provide you with more energy to maintain busy, active lifestyles.

14. If I'm dieting, could I drink Nurishment instead of a meal?

We do not promote Nurishment as a meal replacement or as an aid to dieting, but drinking a can or bottle occasionally instead of a meal is perfectly acceptable. If you wish to drink Nurishment regularly in place of a meal, we recommend that you seek medical advice before doing so.

15. Have you ever considered introducing a light or low calorie version of Nurishment?

We are continually looking at potential new product developments for Nurishment. Currently there are no plans to introduce a light or low cal version, but if you think we should please let us know by posting a message on this website.

16. Should you drink Nurishment straight after a bout of physical exertion, i.e. following a heavy workout in the gym?

Nurishment is ideal as a post-exercise recovery drink and will help to rehydrate you thanks to its high protein content and its unique combination of energy-boosting vitamins and minerals.

17. Why does Nurishment contain sugar?

The key issue is one of general diet and portion control. Nurishment is often consumed as an alternative to a meal because of its filling nature. The total carbohydrate and sugar content of Nurishment needs to be considered in the context of a healthy, balanced diet. If this is considered then the sugar content of the product should not be of concern.

Another important consideration is that Nurishment is being used by active individuals who need an energy source. Nurishment therefore has to meet this requirement by continuing to use sugars to provide that energy.

In addition, although there is added sugar, the higher overall level declared on the nutritional panel is in part derived from the milk sugars (Lactose) that come from the milk itself.

18. Why is Nurishment high in saturated fatty acids?

Nurishment Original is manufactured using whole fat fresh milk as a key ingredient, unlike other products that are manufactured using skimmed milk powder. Nurishment Extra is made with skimmed milk and therefore has less fatty acids.

19. Salt is identified as one of the main causes of high blood pressure. Why does Nurishment contain added salt?

General diet will be influential on determining overall salt intake. The Food Standards Agency recommends a maximum daily intake of 6g of salt a day. Nurishment contains less than 1/18th of this amount.

20. Why does Nurishment contain artificial colours?

The choice of colours selected is influenced largely by the fact that the milk product undergoes an intensive heat process that is quite destructive to many natural colours.

21. Does Nurishment contain any common allergy ingredients?

Nurishment contains dairy products. Anyone allergic to wheat or dairy should not be given Nurishment.

22. Does Nurishment contain any nuts or traces of nuts?

No. The factory producing Nurishment does not have any nut products prepared on the premises

23. Is Nurishment suitable for coeliacs?

All Nurishment products are free from gluten and are therefore suitable for anyone with a gluten allergy.

24. Does Nurishment contain caffeine?

All varieties of Nurishment are caffeine free

25. Does Nurishment provide the recommended daily allowance of vitamins and minerals?

Nurishment provides balanced levels of essential vitamins (A, B1, B2, B6, Niacin, B12, C and folacin) as well as being rich in Calcium and Iron. Each pack of Nurishment provides at least 50% of the RDA for these vitamins listed.
